This plate represents the first Christmas dinner that Tanya and I hosted at our home. It's significant for several reasons:

We love to eat and entertain

If you couldn't tell from reading this blog, both my wife and I love to eat. We also love to entertain. So having Tanya's family over for Christmas was the opportunity to may our love for food and the happiness of sharing that with the people we love.

Celebrating Christmas

Christmas is a chance to celebrate the birth of Jesus with family and friends. While we were able to host, we were also able to go up to my parent's house in NJ and spend time with my family.

A healthy Christmas

Lastly, this year was happy because last year this time, Tanya's dad was in the hospital. Instead of spending time cooking, we were spending time visiting him in the hospital. It's a blessing to have him around and it's a reminder to cherish the time we have with all of those who are close to us.

Celebrating Little Bruh's BDay

This year was the first time in a few years that my brother was in NJ to celebrate his birthday. As is his tradition since he was in single digits and his voice was an octave higher, he requested a homemade cheesecake from our Mom. Her cream cheese rendition of this delicacy is always creamy and delicious. And, as you can see, the masterpiece is topped off with his name and age. I've been there a few times, but I haven't really explored it, much less eaten at many of the great places I've read about. Well, when my wife was meeting up with her girlfriends on a recent Friday night, I got out of work early and spent an afternoon exploring what is arguably the most hyped borough.

After recommendations from several of my coworkers who live in Brooklyn, I had my heart set on Habana Outpost, a cuban spot with outdoor picnic tables and some delicious looking cuban sandwiches. Little did I know, the wife and her girls would be heading there Saturday afternoon. So as not to ruin the novelty for her, we called an audible. Instead of Cuban, we opted for 'cue at The Smoke Joint.

The wife got the (above) pulled chicken sandwich that came with a side of fries. The chicken was dressed in a gold, vinegar-based sauce. The golden color reminded me of a bottle of barbecue sauce a friend of mine gave me from South Carolina a few years back that I was addicted to for more than a year. BBQ sauce on ice cream anyone? But the treat of this plate was the fries. The seasoning on the fries tasted exactly like the seasoning on Herr's BBQ potato chips. It brought me back to my childhood. Tasting them made me want a Minute Maid Mandarin Orange soda. YUM!

In the absence of orange soda, I was able to wash down the deliciousness with their not-to-sweet "limonade". As the name suggests, it's a mix of lemonade and limeade. It definitely was made with fresh lemons and limes and was more on the tart side which I prefer. A refreshing choice on a warm day.

For my meal, I went with the beef ribs at the recommendation of our server. I'm a big fan of beef ribs and these were pretty good. Meaty and smoky with a nice char on the outside. They weren't the most flavorful ribs I've ever tasted, but I enjoyed them.

So I was glad to have gone to Brooklyn and spent some time hanging out and finally getting to sample some of the great food I've read and heard so much about. Looking forward to another return trip this summer.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://thehungrycommuter.blogspot.com/2010/06/field-trip-barbecue-in-brooklyn.html' title='Field Trip! I just can't figure out what I want to eat. And on days like this, I have a fall back: Variety Deli. I started going here (I think when they opened) back around 2005 in part because located at 48th between 5th and 5th, it was a short walk from my office. They have a really good by the pound buffet with lots of rotating options. Perfect for my days when I don't know what I want. I can have a little bit of everything.

Variety is also good because I can eat something healthy and inexpensive, a combination that can often be hard to find. Above, I have string beans, bok choy(!!!), asparagus along with shrimp, calamari and some grilled chicken. And to make sure I get filled up, just a few noodles on the side.

By the pound buffets can be treacherous if you're not careful. You can easily walk away with a $14 container of food. I try to adhere to some of the tips by the great Zach Brooks of Midtown Lunch and keep the costs to a minimum. On this day, my discipline and the ongoing Variety 5 year anniversary special of $5.99 a pound helped me to walk away paying just $6.12 (including tax) for lunch.

So, when you're plagued by indecisiveness at lunch, embrace the love that is the by the pound buffet. You're bound to find something that you'll enjoy!

Skylark Diner Steps Their Game Up

I've always liked the idea of the Skylark Diner. Classic diner food in a slightly upscale setting with some gourmet options and accents. However, to me, the food never lived up to the promise. I tried a variety of breakfast and dinner options and usually settled on the deli omelette with corned beef, pastrami and provolone cheese. It's really good, but not necessarily the reason to make it a favorite. Well with 90 minutes to kill before a Get Him to the Greek, I decided to hit it up. It turned out to be a good choice.

A few months ago, James Beard winning chef Craig Shelton took over in the kitchen. I hadn't been back since the change and so I eagerly scanned the revamped menu, trying to decide what to get. After much contemplation, I went with the beer braised onion and bacon burger with white cheddar cheese.

The burger itself was good to begin with. Good meat well cooked (I ordered mine medium well) and juicy. But the beer braised onions with bacon took the flavor to another pleasant level. The bacon was cooked into the onions, so there was this layer of deliciousness on top of the juicy burger. I was expecting strips of bacon, so it was a bit of a surprise, but it was still good. Every bite made me want to take another. And another. And when I went to the fries for a crunchy interlude, I got a nice vinegar bite along with the salty, crunchy potatoes. A pleasant surprise even though they are titled malt vinegar fries. This was what they had in mind when they created Skylark. Good food elevated by creativity and quality execution.

Also encouraging was the fact that Craig Shelton himself was walking around the dining room, greeting guests and checking to see whether people were enjoying their food. The service was also noticeably improved. I've endured some spotty service in the past there. But all that is in the past, and I'm looking forward to returning and trying more of the newly expanded menu.

Chick-fil-A Spicy Chicken Adventure

I truly enjoy Chick-fil-A. Chicken sandwiches are my go-to fast food item and the sandwiches from Chick-fil-A are probably my favorite. McChickens are an occasional guilty pleasure, but just because McDonald's is hard-wired into my being. And the Checkers chicken sandwich is good, too. But when I read on Me So Hungry that Chick-fil-A was dropping a new spicy chicken sandwich, it immediately made sense.

They had this whole online reservation system prior to the launch. You got to pick a three hour window when you could get your free sandwich. Reservations at a fast food restaurant. Nice.

We headed over for the sandwich and ended up with a whole meal.

In addition to the sandwich, they gave us a bottle of water and and a brownie. We supplemented the lunch with those great waffle fries, the Original Chicken Sandwich (call it the control sandwich) and extra pickles.

The Spicy Chicken Sandwich itself, it was a more peppery version of their Original. Totally worth getting. But if you're like me and really like spicy food, you will need to add hot sauce, or bring your own peppers or something. All in, I now have a new item to order. "Spicy Chicken Sandwich, extra pickles and hot sauce."

Cooking at home -Spicy Turkey Burgers and Mango Salsa

You can't always eat out. As much as I would like to. So my wife and I tagged-teamed on what turned out to be a great dinner: turkey burgers.

OK, so maybe it doesn't sound like the most exciting meal. But with a little creativity, the blank canvas of ground turkey took on a new life. We had some mangoes, so she did a delicious mango salsa. Meanwhile, I spruced up the ground turkey and made it spicy (with cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper and chipotle hot sauce) to balance the sweetness of the mangoes which were at their peak ripeness. Put it all on a toasted roll and it was spicy, sweet, juicy deliciousness.

Eating at home was definitely a treat on this evening.

Vietnamese sandwiches at a Chinese restaurant- my kind of fusion!

When this week started, I didn't know I would be taking a world tour of pork sandwiches. And I concluded my world tour in Asia when I got the taste for Chinese food Friday. Hing Won is right down the street from me, known for their delicious pig (pork belly) over rice. Well, they also use it in a sandwich. It's their variation of a bahn mi, a Vietnamese sandwich.

I'd never had a Chinese food sandwich, but this one gets it right. The rich pork belly is mellowed by a sweet sauce, and pickled vegetables. The sandwich also features a generous serving of cilantro, one of my personal favorites. The bread is toasted and you're left to enjoy a sandwich sure to leave a smile on your face. It was a great way to end the week!

Eating cupcakes to support Haiti

I'm generally a fan of cupcakes. Needing to get back to the office quickly, I opted to grab a quick sandwich. Like the ham and gruyere baguette I had the other day at Le Pan Quotidien, it was composed of pork, cheese, mustard and nice bread. But this was not your average ham and cheese. This was a Cuban. From Margon. It's all mashed down in a panini press until the bread ham and salami are all crispy, cheese is melted and I was drooling at the counter waiting to get my hands on it. This may be my favorite $6 sandwich. Ever. And it was so quick, I was back just in time to answer some questions from my boss. Today, I went to one of my go to spots for lunch: Utsav. The thing I really love about this buffet is that every time I go, they have a few different dishes. They usually have a paneer dish, a couple of lentil dishes and a variety of meat dishes. Today they had goat and some delicious saag chicken. The spinach was smooth and it was actually not overly creamy.

And the best thing about getting out of the office for lunch is you can have some quality time with friends or colleagues. So if you like Indian food and me, let me know and we can hit up the Utsav buffet.

I bet you can't pronounce Quotidien either

I don't know why I never ate at Le Pain Quotidien. I had known about it for some time, but I just never went in there. Actually, I think maybe the reason was because I couldn't pronounce "Quotidien." I mean, that would be embarrassing when a coworker asks you where you went for lunch and you can't even pronounce the place! But i didn't take French in high school. So what do you expect?

But anyway, my wife (who did take French) gave me the pronunciation (ko-ti-dee-YEN) and I gave The Daily Bread a shot.

Oh buddy, this place is official.

All kinds of artisanal breads, pastries and organic spreads and other goodies. But it was lunch time, and I was hungry. So I had my eye on one thing: a sandwich. I opted for the ham and gruyere and I was not disappointed. I mean, the thing tastes as good as it looks. The baguette was so fresh and crusty. The creamy cheese perfectly complimented the salty ham. Know that I will be back for more.

The Office Vulture

At a very young age, my dad called me "The Vulture." And so it's imperative that I have some go to places close to home.

And I've found a couple since moving in August. I love Paratha Junction for Indian food. But I haven't found some staples like a money Chinese food spot or just local places with good dishes. So I set out to try four local spots with my wife. The spots we tried were Szechuan Ace, Paradise Biryani Point, Dosa Grill and Rai Rai Ramen. All located within a quarter of a mile of each other. All 5 minutes from home. And all on the same night! Sounds like fun, huh?

I ordered from the train so I could pick each up on my way home. First, Chinese food.

Szechuan Ace
I got a spicy chicken dish off the regular menu and fried chicken over rice and shredded potato cooked in red oil from the szechuan menu. I also got a scallion pancake, although it was more pancake than scallion. The highlight was the potato. It had a nice flavor and texture. The chicken was cooked well and was served with minced pork and the Chinese greens, like the NYC Cravings truck introduced me to. It wasn't as good as the NY counterpart, which wasn't surprising to me.

Paradise Biryani

I didn't get the biryani here because I my eye on another rice dish. Plus, the biryani at Paratha is really good. Instead, I decided to try the butter chicken. It was enjoyable, but with a closer and equitable option, I doubt I would go back just for that.

Dosa Grill

I got some vegetarian Indian from Dosa Grill. Bhindi masala was the order here (okra in a mild curry sauce) was also very tasty. But it wasn't a game changer. Udipi is closer, so we'll probably stick with that. That's the bhindi masala below.

Rai Rai Ramen

I was excited to try this spot. They have a lot of standard Chinese dishes and sushi on the menu, but I was focused on the Japanese ramen section. I got the chicken katsu curry ramen and kim chee fried rice. The curry broth that came with the ramen was delicious and flavorful. The chicken katsu was nice; panko breaded, crispy and juicy. The only downer were the noodles which were very much like what you would get out of a package. The star of our tasting was definitely the kim chee fried rice. Absolutely delicious! It's hard to mess up fried rice, but this was just great. The kim chee gave great flavor and the pickled ginger gave a bit of bite. And some events are worth it. Like friends’ birthday parties. And Saturday, I made the trek in to attend Alicia’s (pronounced uh-LEE-see-uh) birthday party. She must have juice, because we had the whole back section of PS450 to ourselves. Like 8 tables. Plenty of space to stretch out, relax, converse, dance and (of course) order food.

Dave pulled out the menu and asked what I thought we should get. He suggested we get the barbecue chicken pizza, buffalo chicken bites or macaroni and cheese bites. I looked at him and simply replies, “Yes.” So we ordered all three.

We weren’t expecting culinary greatness. Just deliciousness in various combinations of cheese, dough, chicken and deep fried goodness. And that’s just what we got. I think my favorite was the pizza. It was actually flatbread pizza with grilled barbecued chicken breast meat. The meat was juicy and the sauce was tasty. Dan was killing those deep fried mac and cheese bites. It was the perfect energy boost to dance the night away.

I told Alicia I could tell she was having a good time. How could I say no to that! We decided to go to Le Peep in Edison, NJ, one of my favorite breakfast spots. I didn't realize until I Googled them to add the link to this post that there are Le Peep locations throughout the US. The food is so good, it feels like a family-owned spot, not a chain.

I decided to order my favorite item on the menu: the zapata frittata. It's more of a casserole with scrambled eggs, chorizo, and jalapeno salsa topped with melted cheese, a generous dollop of sour cream and green onions. They also give you their "peasant potatoes" (aka homefries) and an English muffin.

In case you wanted to look for it, I didn't see this item on the online menu. Maybe it's a creation of the Edison, NJ location. Yet another reason to love them. Each location has the autonomy to create it's own dishes and personality. Perhaps that is also part of the reason why they are so good.

It should go without saying that it was delicious. It was a breakfast that warms your stomach and your soul. Ok, that was corny. But you know what I mean. The atmosphere is just so comfortable. When we went to pay, I asked the cashier to take a picture of my "new" dad and I and before I could even give her the camera, she exclaimed, "I love taking pictures!" this is just the epitome of a neighborhood spot.

One last thing - I mentioned that I was here for breakfast with my "new" dad. You can read about that experience and see the picture the cashier took over at TanyaandEddie.com.

Free Food Friday

One of the highlights of any work day is free food! And today I got a whole lot of it. It started as soon as I got in. Jane gave me some curry that her parents made, along with kimchee, pickled jalapenos and some dried anchovy mixture. Delicious!

But that was just the "breakfast appetizer." But I was reminded of its profound truth when I treated myself recently to lunch at Margon. There were many dishes to choose from, but I opted for the cut up pieces of deep fried chicken, or chicharrones de pollo. Crispy and juicy. Just like I remembered from when I used to work two blocks away. Now, I'm all the way on the east side, just far enough to be inconvenient. The wedding and reception were held at Nanina's in the Park in Belleville, NJ, an absolutely beautiful place for a wedding. While rain moved the ceremony inside, it was still really nice. My boy Bryan even shed a tear when his lovely bride Destiny seemingly floated down the aisle in her regal wedding gown. And believe it or not, I got to participate in the ceremony, reading a poem that Bryan wrote! And my mic duties didn't end there - I introduced the newlyweds to their friends and family as they came out to kanYe's Flashing Lights. And this wedding reception was all about the food. I may not have shed a tear during the ceremony, but I think I cried a river when I saw all the food at the reception. Here are the pics...

OK, now on to the hot stuff!!!

Carving station!

Sausage and broccoli rabe. As of late, it's definitely been yogurt. But not just any yogurt. I discovered the love that is Liberte yogurt. I'm a fiend for anything with peach flavoring, so I always just buy all of the peach flavored yogurts that Wegman's has when I go there. Who knew Canada would be hooking me up like that?

And speaking of addictions, I think I'm also addicted to Wegmans in general. I have now forced myself to only shop there, but I used to just wander around there and look at the food, eat as many free samples as I could before the cheese people started looking at me funny, and maybe try a few items I never heard of. I think that's how I started eating Liberte in the first place.

Long live Liberte...and Wegmans too!

Going Out!

The other day was a good lunch day! My boss sent me an outlook appointment for a place that just said "D&D". I was confused, but since the appointment spanned lunch time and my boss is a foodie like myself, I clicked accept.
At 12:30, we strolled the 2 blocks to 979 third avenue. After winding down a few hallways, an elevator ride to the 14th floor and more hallways, we arrived at this place called Astra. Think upscale cafeteria. Three specials (which apparently go fast) were printed on a sheet of paper in an acrylic frame. Tattered paper copies of their daily menu were also on the table near the entrance. Place your order, pay (tip included) and they give you a number that you display at the table of your choice for servers to bring you your food.

Nice view, comfortable, elegant ambiance, comfortable chairs. So far, so good? But would the food stack up? YES.

My flank steak was well seasoned and tender. It was overcooked to medium-well when I ordered medium. Not a big deal for me. The sour cream sauce next to it was adorned with capers and red peppers. A tasty accent. And the salad, though it had a few too many red onions for a business lunch, was topped with a good Dijon vinaigrette and freshly grilled and chopped bread as croutons. A great touch.

My boss's burger was also very good according to him. The brioche bun was apparently very good (all their bread is) and the beef delicious. A third coworker got a grilled ham and cheese he enjoyed. Both sandwiches were served with fries that I believe they described as good McDonald's fries. I can rock with that!

So I had a good lunch, and best of all...it was free! :-)

Brick Lane in Midtown!

So they opened a Brick Lane Curry House on 53rd between 2nd and 3rd 2 blocks from my office! I've eaten at the original several times and the food is great. They also have the hottest curry and food I've ever tasted-the ridiculously hot phaal. The setup is one person each Friday brings breakfast for the whole office (about 25 people). Over the course of a cycle, everyone gets their turn to wow the office with their culinary creativity.

As time had progressed, "Breakfast Club" has fostered a healthy competition among its participants. We've had a range of food from McDonald's (that was me!) to make-your-own breakfast burritos to homemade muffins and cakes.

But Friday, my coworker Lee Ann came up with one of the greatest Breakfast Club meals ever. She brought New Jersey to the city - make your own pork roll (or Taylor's ham if you prefer), egg and cheese sandwiches!! On hard rolls!!!!! New Jersey natives in the office from the 973, the 732 and down to the 609 were elated. And we schooled everyone on how to do it, including adding the salt, pepper and ketchup (and in my case hot sauce). Lee Ann even set up instructions for the rookies.

The finished product was not only beautiful, but delicious. It was definitely a banner day for Breakfast Club. I'm glad I don't have to follow that performance!

The Hungry Commuter

Most people who know me know that I like to eat.

I bring my stomach with me everywhere I go.
